One of the things I like best about living in Rego Park, is the proliferation of Central Asian restaurants and shops stocked with all sorts of delicacies from the former Soviet Union. In a heat wave that means one thing and one thing only: Russian ice cream. I am fond of wearing my fancy hat and twirling my mustache while eating the prepacked chocolate wafer cone.
Happy 2nd Year Anniversary We Heart Astoria! Part of the festivities was a special cocktail in honor of the Astoria blog. Bear, in Long Island City, concocted the drink consisting of vodka, orange juice, simple syrup and sparkling Shiraz. Not only does Bear have a great bar, they also specialize in modern Russian cuisine.
Jimmy’s mom, who typically cuts Jimmy’s hair, not because he’s still a little child, but because that’s actually her occupation, is out of town. Royal II on 108th street, Forest Hills (borderline Rego Park - some people might not consider this as Forest Hills, why argue?) had to get the job done. This German-owned barber shop has been here for 50 years said one of the barbers, but the one who gave me my cut has only been there for 10. That’s him in the picture. His name is Gregory, is Russian and prefers to watch the Knicks games at home, on his TV, cause the beer is just cheaper there. I made sure I gave him a little extra for beer.
