Picked this up from my local Italian bakery. I forgot the name but it’s really crispy & there’s ricotta cheese inside. #astoria #italian #pastry

It’s a pastizz (pl. pastizzi), and it’s Maltese! From Leli’s, 35-14 30th Ave, Astoria.

The bread pudding at Cannelle,

Quoted from William Grimes on his”Guilty Pleasure” entry, from last week’s New York Times article about their past restaurant critics…

“The bread pudding at Cannelle, a French patisserie that, like a miracle, descended from the clouds and landed in a strip mall in East Elmhurst, Queens, a few years ago. The big dangers include a criminally rich red-velvet cake and a shortbreadlike gâteau Breton.” William Grimes

Arguably one of the most delicious burgers in the whole city… the Astor Burger from Astor Bake Shop.  The sweets are insanely fantastic too, but this puppy loaded with applewood bacon, slaw, spicy mayo, swiss cheese, pickles, lettuce, and tomato on challah with garlic herb fries and a glass of sea salt lemonade is about as good as a burger meal can ever get. At Gian Piero Bakery, the allure is both the patrons and the pastries. Pictured in the center is Pasticciotti, a Sicilian pastry that is essentially crust filled with pasty cream (their version) that is absolutely divine. The funny thing about pasticciotti (or as they say it over there, pas-tee-chowt) is that it looks so plain that if I wasnt told there was pastry cream inside, i wouldn’t even give it a second look.

The patrons of Gian Piero are mostly regulars and they hang outside the bakery just like they do in Italy. They sit outside and hang out with everyone who comes by - they even buy each other something from the bakery. It’s like a neighborhood bar, minus the alcohol and the bakery is open until 9pm -ish.

Call ahead if you are coming late, just to make sure they are still open.

While in Flushing the other day, I stopped in at the Apollo Bakery, looking for a red bean anything (mmm… sweet red bean paste…). I bought a few things, including this pineapple pastry. It was in a little cute gold bag at the counter. I wasn’t sure what to expect exactly, but what it turned out to be was simply fantastic. A thin layer of a shortbread type of pastry is wrapped around a substantial amount of sweet pineapple paste.
Super yum. All nommed.

An outrageously delicious version of the traditional Middle Eastern dessert, kanafeh.  Cut from a large round metal pan to-order and served steaming hot, a shredded phyllo pastry is layered with Nabulsi cheese (a salty goat’s milk cheese imported from Jordan), sprinkled with crushed pistachios, and drizzled with a sweet, delicate rose water and honey.  Also sample a kaleidoscope array of exceptional baklavas, pastries, and sweets from this famous shop in the middle of Astoria’s “Little Cairo”.  Al-Sham Sweets & Pastries, 24-39 Steinway (b/w 25th Ave & Astoria Blvd), Astoria, NY 11103; (718) 777-0867

Portuguese egg tart or bola de nata from Tony’s Jamaica Market in Jamaica - delivered all the way from Teixeira Bakery in Newark, NJ. I have never had an egg tart this good in the States. Ohh, so flaky so creamy. You can find other Portuguese products like sausage, coffee, and other pastries there too. Real hidden gem.

The Completo, the Chilean-style hot dog from San Antonio Bakery 2.  This puppy comes on its own little stand—a plump beef frank in a toasted homemade bun, spilling over with sauerkraut, diced tomato, avocado puree, and a zigzag of mayonnaise.  Add a few spoonfuls of pebre, the garlicky house hot sauce, and you’ll see why this $3.50 monster is drawing fans from all over.
